At a time when we have witnessed tragedies such as the heartbreaking loss of Scarlet Wahu, it's high time we amplify our words further. Scarlet’s story is neither the first nor unique; rather it’s another example of the tragedies facing women. That they can be killed in cold blood only for the conversation to suddenly revolve around morality as though that should be the bar used to determine the value of human life. According to the huge constituency of Deputy Jesus, Scarlett was a greed-driven individual who met her bloody fate in pursuit of material glory, ignorant to her that the man she was inviting, to leach at his financial arteries like a vampire, was a murderer. Nonetheless, as these noises reverberated online, there was a beacon of hope when certain women chose not to allow the narrative to be boycotted by such conversations; instead, they took it upon themselves to make it known that every human regardless of gender has a right to live. By directing the narrative, the conversations shifted. A testament to the power of storytelling. A method that has long been used as a vice to control history and issue certain groups power while it renders another weak.
Taking on the theme of this year’s International Women's month of “Inclusion through investing in women”, here at Nubia, we view storytelling as a way to take back our power. When narratives such as femicide in Kenya are skewed and controlled by certain factions, then any form of power is lost to those that wield the microphone. Therefore, as we champion for inclusion in all its dimensions, we can view storytelling as a tool to exert power in order to push the boundaries of insertion and empathy. We, therefore, uphold in great reverence, the women who have taken to the pen and have continued to dance with words on their pages. Their words have given women a voice and are a testament of female storytelling as a way to reclaim our power.
It is in this light that we welcome you to the much-awaited launch of the upcoming Nubia magazine – a celebration of female voices and a platform for change. We believe that by embracing and elevating female storytelling, we can. Stay tuned for our magazine launch, where we'll delve deeper into the power of female storytelling and its potential to spark real, lasting change. Together, let's rewrite the stories of femicide and injustice – one word at a time.
